How do I configure my dialup?

Installing TCP/IP on your Computer 
1. Click on "Start", select "Settings" and choose "Control Panel". 
2. In Control Panel double click on the "Network" icon. , 
3. In the Network dialog box, click on the "Add" button, then select "Protocol" under the "Select Network Component Type" box. Click on the "Add" button to get the "Select Network Protocol" box. 
4. Under the "Manufacturers" list on the left pane, choose "Microsoft", then on the right pane under "Network Protocols" list select TCP/IP. 
5. Click on "OK". 

When you have installed TCP/IP, do not exit the Network dialog box, continue with the following sections. To Setup IP ADDRESS 
1. In the "Network" dialog box select the "TCP/IP-> Dial-up Adapter" entry by clicking on it once, then click on the "Properties" button. Note: If you do not have a Dial-up Adapter entry in the list of your network configuration, go to the section on Setting up dial-up Networking below. 2. In the "TCP/IP Properties" select the "IP Address" option. 
3. Select "Obtain an IP address Automatically". 
4. Click "OK". 

To Setup DNS 
1. In the "TCP/IP Properties" dialog box, click the "DNS Configuration" option. 
2. Click on "Enable DNS". 
3. In the "Host" box, type your host name, which is usually your computer name. If you do not have a computer name, you may not bother or choose a name for your name and type it in. 
4. In the "Domain" box type in 'STARNET.net.ng'. 
5. Click "OK". 

Note: Please, always click the "OK" tabs after your settings. Then you will be prompted to restart your computer. 
Making a Dial-up Networking Connection Your computer vendor should have installed and configured your modem for you. 
1. Double-click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop to open it. 
2. Double-click the "Dial-up Networking" icon inside the window and then, double-click the "Make new connection" icon. The "Make New Connection Wizard" starts. 
3. In the box provided for "Type in a name for the computer you are dialing into" and replace "My connection" with STARNET. 
4. In the "select a modem box" choose the modem you have installed and click next. Ignore the "Area Code" and enter the appropriate number given to you by STARNET customer support in the box provided for Telephone Number. Under the "Country Code" box, scroll down and select "Nigeria" from the list. 
5. Click on next and finish to install the dial-up networking component. 
6. You will now get a STARNET icon in your dial-up networking window. 

You can drag the STARNET icon to your desktop for accessibility.

Configuring Dial-up Networking for STARNET 
1. Right-click the STARNET icon in your dial-up networking window and select "Properties" 
2. In the "General" tab, enter the appropriate number given to you by STARNET customer support in the telephone number box. Uncheck the "Country Code" box and make sure that your installed modem is selected under the "Connect Using" option. 
3. Click on the "Server Types" tab and make sure that "PPP: Windows 95 Windows NT 3.5, Internet" is selected. Under "Advanced Options", Un-check both "Log on To Network" and "Enable Software Compression" options. 
4. Under "Allowed Network Protocols" put a check on the "TCP/IP" and uncheck "NetBEUI" and "IPX/SPX" Compatible" protocols. Click on "TCP/IP Settings" button. If you dial into a remote network that does not use TCP/IP, you can leave the NetBEUI and IPX/SPX checked. 
5. In the TCP/IP Settings window, select "Server Assigned IP Address". 
6. Do not bother about the scripting tab. Click on OK to close all dialog boxes.

Browser Configuration.

How do I set up my browser?
,
Removing Settings of the Proxy Address from your Browser: 
(i). For Internet Explorer 3.02 
1. Start Internet Explorer. 
2. In the 'View" menu click and select "Options". 
3. In the "Options box click on "Connection". 
4. Under "Proxy Server" check "Connect through a Proxy Server" and click on "Settings". 
5. In the "Proxy Settings" dialog remove all proxy settings in the box beside "HTTP", and under "Port" 6. Click "OK' to close all open dialog boxes. 

(ii). For Internet Explorer 4.1 
1. Start Internet Explorer. 
2. In the 'View" menu click and select " Internet Options". 
3. In the "Internet Options box click on "Connection". 
4. Under "Proxy Server" un-check "access the Internet using a proxy server" and click on "Settings". 5. In the box provided for "Address" remove all proxy settings, and in the space provided for "Port" remove all settings. 
6. Click the "OK' to close all open dialog boxes. 

(iii). For Netscape Navigator 3.x 
1. Start Netscape Navigator. 
2. In the "Options" menu, choose "Network Preferences" and click on the "Proxies" tab. 
3. In the Proxies dialog box, select "Manual Proxy Configuration" and click on the "View" button. 
4. In the "Manual Proxy Configuration" box remove all proxy settings in the box next to FTP and in the box provided for the Port number. Repeat this procedure for all other boxes. Ignore the "No Proxies For" box at the bottom of the page. Click OK. 
5. Return the button from manual proxy to direct access. 
6. Click on OK to close all open dialog boxes. 

(iv). For Netscape Navigator 4.x 
1. Start Netscape Navigator. 
2. In the 'Edit" menu bar, choose "Preferences" 
3. Under the "Category" option, click on "Advanced". And select "Proxies" 
4. On the right pane all options for proxy configuration are listed. Select the "Manual Proxy Configuration" option. Click on the "View" button. 
5. In the "Manual Proxy Configuration" box remove all proxy settings in the box next to HTTP and in the box provided for the Port number. Repeat this procedure for all other boxes. Ignore the "Exceptions" box at the bottom of the page. 
6. Return the button from manual proxy to direct access. 
7. Click on OK to close all open dialog boxes.

Email Configuration.

How do I configure my mail?

To receive and send electronic mail messages using STARNETMail, subscribers can use any of the following e-mail clients: 

* Microsoft Outlook Express that comes with Internet Explorer 
* Netscape Mail that comes with Netscape Navigator/Communicator. 

To configure your STARNETMail from Outlook Express: 
1. Start Outlook Express. 
2. From the Tools menu choose "Accounts", select the "Mail" tab and click "Add". 
3. Choose the "Mail" option. This launches the Internet Connection Wizard that guides you through the mail setup. 
4. Enter the name you want in the box provided for "Display Name". Click Next. 
5. Enter your e-mail address in the box provided like this: myname@Starnet.net.ng. Where "myname" represents the name you chose. Click Next. 
6. In the e-mail server name page enter the "mail.starnet.net.ng" in the two boxes provided for POP or IMAP and SMTP Servers. Click Next. 
7. Enter your username in the box provided for "POP Account Name" and put in your password. Click Next. 
8. Type-in a friendly name that you wish to be known by, say, your first name and Click Next. 
9. In the "Choose Connection Type" page, select "Connect Using My Phone Line". Click Next. 
10. Click on "Finish" button to setup your STARNETMail. 

To configure your STARNETMail from Netscape 3.x: 
1. Start Netscape Mail. 
2. From the Options menu choose "Mail and News Preferences". Click on the "Servers" tab. 
3. In the boxes provided, follow the examples below; Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: mail.starnet.net.ng Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: mail.starnet.net.ng POP3 Username: Enter your e-mail username Ignore other entries. Click on the "Identity" tab. 
4. In the boxes provided, follow the examples below; Your Name: Enter your full name Your E-mail: Enter your e-mail address (xxxxx@starnet.net.ng) Reply to Address: Enter your e-mail address as shown above. Your Organisation: Optional Signature File: Optional (enters your first, last or full name) 5. Click on the organisation tab and do the following: Check the "Remember Mail Password" box. Thread Mail Messages: Optional Thread Mail Messages: Optional 
6. Click OK to close all open dialog boxes. 

To configure your STARNETMail from Netscape 4.x: 
1. Start Netscape Mail. 
2. Go to Edit/Preferences/Mail&Groups/Identity: 

* Your Name: Type your full name 
* Email address: Your email address 
* Reply to: Ignore this entry 
* Organisation: Enter your organisation name (Optional) 
* Signature File: Optional 

3. Select "Mail Server"; 

* Mail Server User Name: enter your e-mail name (xxxxx@starnet.net.ng) 
* Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: mail.starnet.net.ng 
* Incoming Mail (POP3) Server: mail.starnet.net.ng 
* Check: POP3 
* Don't Check "Leave Messages on Server after Retrieval"
